Preparations:

General suggestions to help make packing easier:

  • Get organized about what to pack. Pack rarely used items first.
  • Start packing as soon as you discover you're moving.
  • Do not pack flammable items or non-allowable items.
  • Make sure the packing containers have sufficient interior padding. The more cushion the better.
  • Have the contents and location marked on the outside of the container.
  • Have "Fragile" marked on all sides of the containers' exterior for breakable items.
  • The ink from old newspapers easily rubs off onto your items, so use caution when using it. You may also contact your local agent for new, clean newsprint paper.
  • Mark the unpacking order on the containers. For essential items such as hygiene, cooking, etc., mark them to be opened first.
  • Pack breakable items separate from non-breakable items.
  • Make sure there is no room in the containers for the packed items to shift. Pack all items tightly.
  • Use sturdy tape specifically designed for packing. Regular tape will not be strong enough for a full moving container. Sturdy packing tape is available at your local agent.
  • Use professional packing tape. Masking tape will not be strong enough for fully packed cartons. Professional packing tape is available from your local agent.

Packing China:

  • Carefully wrap china in a few sheets of clean newsprint paper. Place newsprint paper in the bottom of a Dishpak for cushioning. Wrap each piece individually, then wrap up to three in a bundle with a double layer of paper. Place the bundled items in the container, on edge in rows.

Packing Silver:

  • Nest the silver together and wrap. Cushion the nested packs in the silver chest. Then the chest in clean newsprint paper.

Packing Stemware:

  • Individually wrap the stemware with protective paper inserted into the goblet and around the stem. Wrap each goblet with a thick, cushioned wrapping and place stem up in the tiered dishpack.

Packing Soft Goods:

  • Pack soft goods, like linen and pillows, in lined containers separated by layers of clean paper.

Packing Shoes:

  • Individually wrap the shoes to prevent abrasive damage while in the packing container if shoe boxes are not available. Pack shoes in their original shoe box if possible.

Packing Clothes:

  • Leave clothes on hangers and hang in special wardrobe containers.

Packing Lamp Shades and Bases:

  • Shades can be nested inside each other, but be sure they are separated by paper. Handling them by their wire frames only, place in a carton lined with paper. Make sure the lamp shade is snug using protective paper around the outside. Specially designed cartons are available for lamp bases.

Packing Stereos and Other Electronics:

  • Pack electronic equipment and devices in their original boxes if possible.
  • If possible, pack electronics in their original cartons. If proper packing materials are used (bubble wrap, newsprint, foam sheeting, comforters/blankets, pillows, etc.), electronics can be safely packed in sturdy containers.
  • Use a generous amount of packing material to thoroughly pad the bottom of the container.
  • Generously wrap the electronic with paper and place in container.
  • Tightly pack enough padding around the top of the electronic to keep it from acquiring damage.
  • Seal the box firmly with packing tape.
  • Label the container as “Fragile" & "Top Load.”
Note: After unpacking the electronics, do not plug them in until checking for any moisture they may have collected and have reached room temperature.

Packing Books:

  • Alternating the spine and open side of the books, lay them flat in the container. Place a protective piece of paper between each book to keep them from sticking together.

Packing Statuary and Figurines:

  • Wrap statuary and figurines using clean paper until the item is adequately cushioned. Whenever possible, first wrap each item with bubble wrap.

Packing Bottles:

  • First, tape the container shut and wrap in clean newsprint. If possible, place each one in a watertight and seal-able bag. Place in carton, packing each one tight enough to prevent shifting.

Packing Mirrors and Glass:

  • Wrap the picture or mirror using a generous cushion of clean paper. Place in a flattened packing or telescoping carton. Using packing tape, securely seal the carton. Do not lay the items flat. Always stand them on their edge.

Packing Computers:

  • Pack computers in their original cartons whenever possible. If proper packing materials are used (bubble wrap, newsprint, foam sheeting, comforters/blankets, pillows, etc.), computers can be safely packed in sturdy containers.
  • Use a generous amount of packing material to thoroughly pad the bottom of the container.
  • Generously wrap the computer with paper and place in container.
  • Tightly pack enough padding around the top of the computer to keep it from acquiring damage.
  • Seal the container firmly with packing tape.
  • Label the container as “Fragile" & "Top Load.”
Note: After unpacking computers, do not plug them in until checking for any moisture they may have collected and have reached room temperature. Be aware of  any special considerations that may be involved with moving any computer.
